On Thursday, December 1, 2022 traffic was staged on Gilmer Road to the North-East side of the roadway. This configuration will be in effect for approximately 2 weeks, while the new pavement is installed at the southwest corner of Gilmer and Midlothian Roads. The pavement has been removed in this corner and the new storm sewer has been installed as of this past Saturday. Grading and stone base placement is ongoing today with asphalt installation and other items to follow this week.
During the week of December 12, 2022, the road will be opened fully for the final winter configuration. The intersection will allow 2 lanes in each direction, left turn lanes and a right turn lane for southeast bound Gilmer and northeast bound on Midlothian. A shoulder will also be created along the outside edge of the roadway by painting the line several feet off the new curb. The installation of the temporary pavement markings is weather dependent as the markings cannot be placed in wet conditions. Once these markings are installed, most of the traffic barrels will be removed for the winter until work resumes in the spring.
The remaining work to be completed next spring will include the installation of the concrete sidewalk along the east side of Gilmer Road, the placement of the remaining landscaping in the same area, the final asphalt surface course, and the permanent striping installation.
